In episode 1, Kara dives into the beginnings of one of the greatest dumpster fires in American history. What started off as a noble movement to make men better men and to eliminate a societal toxin, turned into a decade of insanity, crime, and abject poverty for many. Kara takes us down the origins of what would become one of the most famous constitutional amendments in modern history. Alcohol is one of the most influential contributors to the development of this nation, but simultaneously, a major detractor.
In episode 2, Kara discusses the bootlegging industry and the source of alcohol. In 3, she talks 1920's culture and the effects of the Speakeasy. Finally, in episode 4, she goes down the rabbit hole that is organized crime and it's rise during the Prohibition era.
Doctors could legally prescribe whiskey for “medical purposes.” During Prohibition, over 11 million prescriptions for alcohol were written annually.
Bootleggers re-distilled industrial alcohol (used for paint or fuel) to make it drinkable, but the government ordered these supplies to be poisoned with chemicals like methanol resulting in the deaths of an estimated 10,000 people.
When the 18th Amendment was ratified in 1919, Americans rushed to stockpile liquor before it became illegal.
While groups like the Women’s Christian Temperance Union pushed for Prohibition, others, such as Pauline Sabin’s Women’s Organization for National Prohibition Reform, fought for its repeal.
Carrie Nation was famous for her “hatchetations". She would storm into saloons and smash liquor bottles and bars with a hatchet to protest alcohol.
